With new bolted cliffs being developed each year, Huu Lung, Vietnam is rapidly emerging as one of the most exciting climbing destinations in Southeast Asia. Today, the area boasts over 110 sport routes, including Vietnam’s longest sport climb at 105 metres.

Most routes are outstanding lines averaging around 30 metres in height, all carefully equipped by VietClimb, the pioneers of sport climbing development in Lang Son Province. Below are five highlights that climbers can look forward to when visiting Huu Lung.

Head Wall ( Tuong Dau)

This imposing, pyramid-shaped cliff stands like a natural fortress overlooking a narrow road that winds through a dramatic limestone valley. Its two massive triangular faces provide an ideal introduction to the three-dimensional climbing typical of karst limestone terrain.

Well-spaced bolts invite climbers to move confidently around cone- and candle-shaped stalactites while becoming familiar with smooth limestone volumes. Head Wall offers 23 routes ranging from 5c to 7a, making it a favourite among beginners and intermediate climbers looking to build technique and develop their lead climbing skills.

The Arch ( Cong Vom)

Natural limestone arches formed by ancient collapses of sinkholes never fail to capture a climber’s imagination. A steep, hidden trail winding through custard apple orchards leads to this remarkable formation—the only fully bolted climbing arch in Southeast Asia.

Choose from routes graded up to 7a and explore the towering stone columns that support a ceiling decorated with hanging stalactites, all while enjoying breathtaking views over the valley below.

WoofStuck Wall

Named after the livestock and barking dogs that guard the surrounding rice and chilli fields, WoofStuck Wall is home to some of the hardest sport routes in Southeast Asia.

This is where elite Vietnamese and international climbers gather, rehearsing complex sequences on the ground before committing high above it. Expect slippery slopers, razor-thin edges and slick limestone columns that demand precision and strength. Near the anchors, the intensity of the climbers contrasts sharply with the peaceful agricultural landscape below.

Passe-Muraille

Meaning “to pass through walls”, Passe-Muraille is a striking, freestanding pillar rising from a massive limestone base in a secluded, enclosed valley. With long, sustained routes reaching up to 30 metres, this crag is a favourite among strong intermediate climbers ready to push into the 7b / 5.12a range.

Climb narrow tufa-filled grooves decorated with pockets and water-sculpted features, while horses and cattle graze quietly among shrubs and grass far below.

Dragon Wall (Long Thanh)

Dragon Wall (Long Thanh) is Huu Lung’s newest climbing area, completed in 2020. Hidden within a west-facing recess of a deep valley, the cliff resembles the ruins of a medieval fortress, surrounded by natural moats and rain-filled pools during the wet season.

With 22 routes ranging from 4c to 7b, including several “king lines” up to 40 metres, Dragon Wall offers long, scenic climbs framed by vibrant tropical forest—often guarded by water buffalo basking in the mud at the base of the cliff.
